First Light

Main Stree Music Series

Holiday festivities begin the first of December with the raising of the First Light Ball of Lights into position on the Clocktower building in Historic Downtown Cortland. The First Light Ball of Lights is a symbol of the bright future of the Cortland community.

Cortland’s Main Street hosts the “First Light” New Year’s celebration, continuing a tradition started with the city’s centennial celebration. The event features musical entertainment, a fireworks display, and of course, the dropping of the “Ball of Lights” at the stroke of midnight.

The Mayor of Cortland performs the final countdown to the New Year and Main Street is closed to vehicle traffic between Court and Port Watson streets. Main Street restaurants host private parties, extend their hours, or hold dinner specials for the First Night celebration.
